KANSAS CITY, Mo. (Dec. 21, 2023) -- Just in time for cuffing season, Cassie Taylor (for fans of Banks, Labrinth, Bishop Briggs, Lana Del Ray, Fiona Apple, H.E.R.) returns to the spotlight with her new single, “Desire,” released 12.21.23. Thanks to Taylor’s stage sabbatical, she turned to exploring her selfhood with full intention and authenticity, creating a brand that is rooted in the foundation of sexual empowerment for women and embracing her identity as a queer Black and Biracial woman, which shines through in her new single “Desire” and her role as a Playboy Bunny. No stranger to Spotify, where, despite her decade-long sabbatical from touring and new music, she surpassed 1 million streams, Cassie Taylor brings us her long-awaited single that will make you want to reclaim your power and remind you of the force you are.
“Desire came to me when I started owning my queer identity, and I felt like I was finally stepping into my power,” says Taylor, who also produced her new single. She continues, “Desire is about owning my sexuality in contrast to the shame and social constructs that are often the largest inhibitors in female sexual gratification and empowerment. I used to think that once you were 30, your life was over, but that’s not true at all. I’m a 37-year-old single mom and a Playboy Bunny. We don’t have an expiration date. We’re still here, and we’re still sexy.” Taylor’s blend of expertise as a singer-songwriter, producer, and musician manifests itself through “Desire” by nodding to her past work while adding cinematic, slower, steamy, and sexy components. Her electric roots sound bends genres by acknowledging the historical roots of the Black Banjo, which the entirety of the single is built around, accompanied by modernized urban beats, all tied up in a message of authenticity, inclusion, and empowerment. She started her career touring internationally as a bassist at 16, beginning with a national tour for her father, critically acclaimed blues musician and songwriter Otis Taylor. Taylor’s formative years as a touring artist led her to share the stage and record with blues and rock legends, including Joe Cocker, John Oates, Gary Moore, and Keb’ Mo.’ After an enduring 12-year touring career concluding with an aggressive international tour, Taylor faced a reckoning with the challenges of being a young female musician and a deep recognition of the struggles she was experiencing with her mental health, taking a step back from the stage for the next decade. “When I walked away from music at 28 following a suicide attempt, the industry standard for female musicians was to be thin, pretty, white, and most importantly, young. That, coupled with the invisible but prevailing expiration date where, at a certain age, their career was no longer marketable or a consumable product, I felt like my viability as an artist was coming to a close. I didn’t fit the industry’s beauty standards. I was in my late twenties, and I was living inauthentically, knowing that my creative and sexual identity no longer belonged to me,” says Taylor. “There is so much power in vulnerability and honesty, especially when it’s not pretty. Music is an omnipresent connector for shared experiences, and in this new era, my motivation is reclaiming my identity and empowering people to do the same with theirs.” |
